Every one of us has dreams. Usually those dreams are something that affects the quality of our lives, either something small or slightly bigger. This documentary film follows for 2-3 years how the dreams of people from different cultural backgrounds collide with reality at a pulp factory in Uruguay. The workplace is multinational and both the local and the foreign workers strive for a better life. But who will get a coveted steady job and who has the strength to carry on in harsh conditions as conflicts make it hard to finish the perennial project.
One of the largest pulp giants, UPM, is building a 2,5 billion dollar pulp mill to produce tissue paper for the Far Eastern markets. The factory is being built on the sparsely populated pampa of Uruguay.
The construction of the pulp mill and its Uruguayan infrastructure with all the possible challenges involved is the background for a global phenomenon: a multinational corporation maximises the profits by taking the production to a country that has cheap labour, but to build the industrial complex they need high paid skilled workers who are mainly Europeans. Those skilled workers are a modern version of gig workers willing to travel thousands of kilometers and move to a different culture. Meetings with the locals vary from romances to fights, strikes and demonstrations.
Despite cultural differences everyone has a personal dream that they wish to fulfill, be it finding a spouse, buying a house of their own, or having a fancy car.
This film is about those little people with their everyday dreams that surround the giant Finnish pulp plant. At the same time it is a film about a larger global phenomenon where it is becoming harder to find work that could make those dreams possible. While work escapes from others, to some it brings opportunities closer.
And what are the dreams of the corporation owners or the politicians of Uruguay? The dreams of the policy makers and the public servants? What kind of problems arise when dreams coming from different worlds collide?

Kivilaitumet kertoo tarinan paimentolaisperheestä, joka asuu Himalajalla Chantangin ylängöllä Ladakhissa. Tässä kylmässä autiomaassa, ympäristöistä epäsuotuisimmassa, isä Sonam, äiti Phuntsok, vanha setä Tsewang ja pojat Padma ja Kunsang tulevat niukasti toimeen kasvattamalla pashmina vuohia. Kamppailu elämästä sisältää paradoksin: Ladakhin karut ja kiviset olosuhteet tarjoavat kasvuympäristön yhdelle maailman hienoimmista materiaaleista, pashminavillalle. Paimentolaisten kasvattamien vuohien lämmittävä karvapeite on ylellisten Kashmir shaalien raaka-aine. Se on perheen ainoa tulonlähde ja siitä riippuu myös perheen poikien koulunkäynti.
Elokuva seuraa perhettä läpi vuodenaikojen kertoen heidän toimeentulostaan ja selviytymisestään ankarissa olosuhteissa. He pyrkivät kohti helpompaa elämää miettien jopa paikalleen asettautumista. Ladakhin paimentolaiset ovat siirtymätilassa perinteisen ja modernin elämän välillä.
