Rebellion for Future, the first feature documentary by visual artist Saku Soukka, dives deep into the heart of Finland’s Extinction Rebellion community. Filmed over two years, from the forest landscapes of Lapland to the bustling streets of Helsinki, the film captures the urgency, vulnerability and potentiality of the movement fighting for a livable planet. The film’s protagonist is the collective movement itself, though a few individual activists are more prominently present.
The rebels demand climate justice and a fairer society, where financial profit does not come at the expense of future generations. One of their chosen tools is nonviolent civil disobedience: blocking roads, factories, and production lines with their own bodies. Their actions provoke fierce responses – criticism, arrests, trials and sometimes violence. The viewer is invited to weigh these contrasting perspectives. Yet they act openly, with their names and faces, continuing a long tradition of civil resistance.
Soukka’s intimate camera reveals not only the clashes with authority, but also the personal toll of activism. What happens to young people when their care of a collapsing future meets the harsh reality of resistance? Rebellion for Future is both an urgent chronicle of our times and a deeply human portrait of courage, fear, and hope.
