The documentary tells about Hung Thanh, one of the first self-employed entrepreneurs in Vietnam. Hung Thanh’s story shows us the real¬ity of today’s Vietnam and gives us a feel for those challenges surviving in “socialist market economy” requires. Hung Thanh is a man of principle: he renounced the membership of communist party, because he considered self-employed entrepreneur¬ship inconsistent with the political line of the party. Today it’s a different story; the Party stands for open market economy, and an old veteran of war can’t accept the open corruption of the Communist Party, nor the exploitation of party membership in the self-promotion of the members.
Hung Thanh served 14 years in the army militat¬ing against Americans, Red-Khrems and Chineses. When he returned to his home village, the Vietnam¬ese economy was finally free and Hung Thanh was one of the first entrepreneurs. This former military scout decided to end traditional cultivation of rice and started to gather metal scraps. The most valu¬able metal scraps are old aerial bombs that haven’t exploded. Americans dropped them all over Viet¬nam and Laos. Now that Hung Thanh is almost sixty years old, he is turning over his small business to his oldest son. They travel together to Laos to buy bro¬ken trucks, which they strip for adaptable spare parts and the rest they sell as metal scrap. With trucks, they also transport defused bombs.
